Hello! I am Paul and my passion, as you can see from the photo, is the fishing. I work the lakes and the rivers from when I six years and the techniques I have tried, more or less, (almost) all. Since 1999, living with the "fever" of carp fishing, which is still "my" technique. Working in the world of fishing since 2001, first as a reporter and editor for the tested Fish for Carp, Fishing, Carp Fishing Magazine Carp Fishing Mania, then as editor of the monthly Carp Fishing Top. Today I work as a full-time SportIT, where I take care of everything related to our wonderful passion. How to choose a reel from carp fishing

The choice of the reel to match the rod depends on the type of carp fishing that we are used to practicing.

To make it even more simple the concept, we must first understand if we will fish exclusively from the shore, and then at distances reachable with a throw (measures of “human” are within 130 meters), or if you descend the triggers with the aid of a boat or a punt boat with remote control.

These are the two elements that will affect mainly the choice.

Before I see any practical case, we analyze together the various features of the reels carp fishing that we find in the trade.

THE SYSTEM BAITRUNNER
It was, and still is, the symbol of carp fishing. In fact, before the advent of this technique in English in our Country, very few knew of these reels with release system of the clutch.

How it works a baitrunner? In a few words, it is as if the reel had a double clutch.

The first is the main one, i.e. the one controlled by the knob that we find above the coil (clutch front) or in the terminal part of the body (clutch back) of the reel.

This regulates the supply of wire during the phases of combat: depending on how it is calibrated (more or less “hard”), releases the thread at the time of the escapes of the fish.

The second clutch is the baitrunner, which is activated usually through a lever positioned under the “foot” of the reel.

Once thrown, the bait, rests the rod on a rod pod or on the pegs, and it activates precisely the baitrunner lowering (or raising, in some models) the switch.

In this manner “unlock” the clutch in the main: i.e., the fish does not meet with resistance when your going to catch and run away. Thus, the so-called “departure”.

The baitrunner was created just as an accessory to facilitate the fisherman in the answer to the typical escape of the carp which, unlike the other fish, as soon as it is taken away quickly, taking very thread.

What happens, then, once the fish took the bait? We hear the warning sound, you could run on the barrels, and, once grasped the barrel, we turn the crank of the reel: with this gesture, the baitrunner is “close” and the game enters the clutch primary, then we will be able to cast the fish into good resistance and planting for a good hook in the fish's mouth.

We summarize theuse of the baitrunner:

1) Launch the bait and stand the rod on the rod pod;
2) we Lower (or raise) the lever to the baitrunner;
3) The fish bites and takes the wire, the reel spins quickly;
4) Take the rod, grab the crank and start to turn;
5) usually after half a turn the baitrunner will close and we will fight the fish with the clutch and primary, it is adjusted to the tightness of the wire coil prior to launch.

Having said this, we note that some reels have baitrunner also have the ability to adjust the tension of the clutch secondary through a second knob.

This accessory is useful especially if we fish in the river, or wherever debris in the movement can get caught on the line and “take a thread from the reel.

THE REELS BAITRUNNER AND CLUTCH QUICK
With the evolution of the continental carp fishing and the need, even in England, to launch more and more far, the carp anglers have begun to adopt the reels surf casting, or the so-called big pit.

These reels, in comparison to the classic gear with a baitrunner, they are equipped with larger coils, large and roomy.

The adaptation of these reels, the carp fishing has assumed initially to get used to a different clutch system, the so-called fine drive.

To explain it in simple words, the clutches of the reels surf casting are very precise and “long”, which are many turns of the knob control to switch from the maximum aperture (minimum resistance) to the total closure (maximum resistance).

Thanks to the use of increasingly massive part of carp anglers, companies have started to modify the clutches of the reels surf casting, creating the so-called baitrunner spool or “reels baitrunner”.

These terms generally describe two types of friction:

- Clutch quick: simply, compared to the normal reels, the friction of these big pit closes much more quickly. To understand this better, typically just already a full revolution of the knob control to switch the clutch open clutch almost closed (while, in the eddies, surf classics, they also serve three or four);

- Clutch and baitrunner spool: you recognize why, in the middle of the knob of the clutch, in the main, is this a wheel. Depending on the direction in which we turn, we can adjust the number of turns of the main dial to switch from a trim to the clutch is open to a trim-to-clutch closed. In some models, thanks to this accessory, with just a quarter turn we will be able to close completely the clutch. Then, once on the barrel, in a moment we will be able to put voltage to the line, as if we had a baitrunner.

WITH OR WITHOUT CLUTCH-FREE?
This is the main question that you pose all the carp anglers who need to purchase a new reel: with baitrunner or without?

The answer may not be unique, and also comes into play in the taste of the fisherman.

The advantages of baitrunner are, without a doubt, the convenience and the speed in the control of the ferrata.

The disadvantages are related to the presence of a mechanism in more, that may be damaged and wear out over time, and the real need to “escape” a fish: those fishing in the great lakes down to the lines with the boat, for example, may not need a clutch totally open, because of the great distances, combined with the elasticity of the line, enough to ensure a bit of space to fish prior to our intervention on the barrel.

Of course, if we use a reel without the baitrunner we have to be very careful where you grab the barrel, at the time of departure, and lock the clutch with the hand.

Without, however, exaggerating with the pressure, because the “close” of stroke on the coil could lead to slamate unwanted.

So what to choose? We recommend, to someone who is starting out, to try a reel with a baitrunner to familiarize yourself with the departures of carp.

Also because it is likely that the first fish to take place in the quarry or in the water by limited size, where it is not necessary to drop the lines with a boat.

BIG PIT AND LARGE REELS
We have already said that many carp anglers have started to use reels surf casting, instead of the “classic” reels with baitrunner.

The “blame” for this is the development of carp fishing in the large european lakes (the so-called carp fishing “continental”), in which the rods are lowered into the water with the boat at long distances from the shore.

The reels with baitrunner, though great, had not sufficient capacity of thread: to new carp anglers europeans were used, in fact, the coils which contain at least 400 metres of 0.35, if not more... that's where is born the “fashion” to use the large eddies from the sea, even in fresh water.

The fact that they were heavy not interested very much, in a technique where the line is resting on a support.

From here it is then down a consequence that has also affected the fishing from the shore: with larger coils the throws are longer, because the thread, on leaving, is of a more harmonious and makes the coils larger.

That's why, today, the fishing reel by carp fishing is not just the one with the baitrunner.

And even were created on the reels come with both spool big pit both clutch and baitrunner: combine the convenience of clutch-free to the large capacity of the wire and to the coil of large dimensions.

SIZES
Typically, the reels carp fishing are included in a range of sizes, which goes from 8000 (reel considered “small”) to 14000 (the reel is very large, from the great waters).

In the last few years have developed some of the trends that want to use reels very small, and even size 4000 and 5000, to be applied on the rods dedicated to fishing the so-called “stalking”, that is, with continuous movements in search of fish, or for float fishing.

THE MATERIAL OF THE COIL
It is important to take into account the material of the coil, particularly in a case: if we decide to load on the reel the braid.

The line, in fact, is a type of thread that “chokes” the coil, and for this it must be very durable, then metal.

The coils in graphite on the market today are solid but, especially in the case of reels, and fishing at long distances, are not ideal since they run the risk of deforming under the “throttling” of the braid.

Then, if in the starting we know that we will be using the braided line, orientiamoci on the reels with the coil in the metal.

RELATIONSHIP RECOVERY
In carp fishing, the ratio of recovery has not much importance. Typically, the reels carp fishing spectrum, in the range between 5:1 and 6:1.

There is only one kind of reel that requires a ratio of recovery very fast, one that we devote to rod spod.

Today in the market there are eddies special, defined precisely “Spod”, which are equipped with a retrieval ratio much faster, and are able, therefore, to recover more wire with a single turn of the crank (some models arrive at 110 inches per crank revolution, when the average of a big pit from the carp fishing is situated around 90).

The high speed recovery is required in a reel spod because we use it for feeding with rocket and Spomb: especially in the race, quickly recover pasturatore helps us to download a lot more groundbait.

PRACTICAL EXAMPLES
To make easier the choice, let's do some practical examples. Who is in the process of buying a reel you will be able to recognize in one of these profiles:

“I just started carp fishing and pescherò especially in caves, or in small rivers to show me the bones” – Especially at the beginning, it is important to familiarize yourself not only with the equipment, but especially with the fish. The carp is a fish, the powerful, the joints are often powerful and can put in trouble a person who has never had to deal with. The baitrunner is an accessory that helps us to deal with these situations and to “forgive” some distraction (because, in the case of a clutch that is too closed, in the best case, we lose the fish, while in the worst the cane could end up in the water). From the point of view of the size, a 8000 or 10000 should be more than good.

“I fish in the carp fishing for a while, and so far I've only been to the cave but every so often I would do some bet in the great lakes” – The advice that we give, in this case, is two-fold: we can choose a reel baitrunner with reel big pit (in sizes 10000 and 12000) or switch to a reel with the clutch fast without the baitrunner. It is the classic situation of someone who has started maybe with a reel baitrunner and want “something more” to tackle the great waters.

“Not the peach from the boat, only from the shore, but I need to run long distances and occasionally I would do some race” – In this latter case the best performing are those surf-casting, which is adapted to carp fishing. Reel big imbobinamento perfect: this is the secret for those who want to reels specifically designed for the launch. With or without the baitrunner, it depends on your tastes. Note, however, that, at equal size, a reel lighter than it makes us more in the launch. The baitrunner, then, may turn out to be unnecessary.

“I'm an angler to big water, the peach-tree only down to the lines with the boat” – You need a reel that contains both wire. At least 500 metres of 0.35. In addition, it should be reliable from the mechanical point of view. Oriented models (bigger sizes 10000-12000-14000) with coils in the metal. The baitrunner for the type of fishing you do, it is not essential.

As for the reeds, even in the choice of the reel , the experience and the personal taste matter a lot. There are carp anglers that believe the baitrunner useless, others who consider it indispensable: from a technological point of view, the models on the market today have reached a level of reliability that will cover the needs of all carp anglers, even those who want the baitrunner on the reels large and very powerful.

The reel is a choice related to the habits of fishing and needs, which change with experience: for this, let's not pretend that it is immediately “final”.
