Paolo Meneghelli

Hello! I am Paul and my passion, as you can see from the photo, is the fishing. I work the lakes and the rivers from when I six years and the techniques I have tried, more or less, (almost) all. Since 1999, living with the "fever" of carp fishing, which is still "my" technique. Working in the world of fishing since 2001, first as a reporter and editor for the tested Fish for Carp, Fishing, Carp Fishing Magazine Carp Fishing Mania, then as editor of the monthly Carp Fishing Top. Today I work as a full-time SportIT, where I take care of everything related to our wonderful passion. How to Choose a Pond Trout Can

The trout fishing in the pond is wrongly seen as a simple techniquethat requires little equipment and little effort.

It is not so: as with all things, to be done well it requires commitment and dedicated equipment that can also allow us to better address the different fishing situations that we face.

If through any catalogue of companies-manufacturers of fishing rods and trout, we realize that, for the technique of the “pond”, each model is produced in various versions that differ in such characteristics such as action, feel, power and length.

In addition to this, if we go in a fishing lake during a race, we realize that the garisti often have with them 6-8 rods. It is not an exaggeration, because each tool has a specific task.

Let us now analyze the various characteristics of the rods trout pond on the market, and we try to make it as clear as possible on all aspects to bring those who approach this technique to a conscious choice.

LENGTH
The rods specifically designed for fishing trout in the pond have a length between 3.8 and 4.7 metres.

The length varies depending on the power of the tool. A rod 3.8 meters, it is usually a barrel of “light”, for the mortars (but it would be better to say “weights”, as in trout-fishing light you also use the slides, the sinkers and the rosaries) that does not exceed 10 grams.

Rods of around 4.2 meters are suitable for a use of “average”, and simplifying, we can say that they are the “allround”.

Rods 4.5 meters are considered a powerful or very powerful: it is of the favorite models from those who need to fish with weights from 30-40 grams, and this happens especially in summer when the trout is stationed on the bottom and the bait must be moved quickly in the lower layers.

So, in reality, the choice of length is based not so much on the “taste”, as in other fishing techniques, but is bound to the power of the tool: the more powerful, the longer.

POWER

As for the spinning, the power of the barrel is expressed in grams, or in a weight range of minimum and maximum within which the rod “works” correctly.

For example, if we take into account a tool declared to be “5-10 grams”, and to know that that barrel will launch very good ballasts included in that weight range, with a maximum of 10 grams, while it will not be exploited fully with weights lighter and similarly will be at risk to rupture in case of use with bombards or lead weights heavier.

In general, however, the rods fishing at the trout pond variano between an output of 0-3 grams to a maximum of 40-50. How to choose, then? Let us help with a small summary schematic:

- Rods with power between 0 and 10 grams: fishing “light”, from the slide to piombino, passing through the be scared;
- Rods with power between 10 and 20 grams: fishing with “bombardine”, or for any actions that we can define “medium” and “medium-heavy”;
- Rods with power exceeding 20 grams: are the most powerful, and used to fish at depth or at a great distance from the shore, using the mortars are very heavy;

To those who want to start with the trout fishing in the pond, we recommend choose a tool that is neither too powerful nor too light, able to cover most situations.

Although, to fully enjoy all the nuances of this technique from the very beginning, the ideal would be to have at least one tool for every power range: ultralight, medium and powerful.

When we speak of “power”, however, is the need for further clarification, which we treat in the next paragraph.

THE "NUMBERS" ON THE DRUM
When we look at any rod that is created specifically for trout fishing in the pond, the first thing that leaps to the eye, in addition to the diameter of the drum, different depending on the version, is the presence of a number positioned just above the plate reel seat.

From 0 to 9, each version of the barrel corresponds to a number, which is closely related to power.

It has the task to make it even more specific data on grams lanciabili by a tool.

For example, if we take into account the power range of 0-10 grams, and within this we find the reed marked by the numbers 0, 1, 2, and 3, where “0” are designed the rods ultra light fishing with the slide, and the “1”, “2”, and “3” are, instead, those fishing to be scared with the plummet.

In particular, we can take as an example a manufacturer of rods-trout, which, in the classification, reads as follows:

- 0= 0-3 grams
- 1= 1-4 grams
- 2= 2-5 grams
- 3= 3-8 grams
- 4=5-10 grams
- 5=8-12 grams
- 6=10-18 grams
- 7=15-20 grams
- 8=20-30 grams
- 9=25-40 grams

Of course this is a specific case and each company has its own “scan” of the powers.

However, this scheme does not differ much from those that are characteristics of almost all the rods from trout pond in the trade, regardless of the companies.

We add, then, that on the stem of the cane is always reported but the range of real power, then, in case of doubt, we can still verify the real “badness” of the barrel.

STRENGTH AND SENSITIVITY
Before continue with the last major aspect, or that of the action, we explore what is defined a little bit how the basic dilemma of the rods from the fishing to the trout in the pond: the power or sensitivity?

In fact, from a technical point of view, an aspect excluded, or however, to affect, on theother: canes powerful, are less sensitive, rods are sensitive and less powerful.

We notice, in the days in which the trout eat so listless, with little aggression, and the lack of sensitivity on the tip there is a delay at the beginning, and then lose the bite.

As if the trout are at a great distance from the shore, and our barrel is not sufficiently “tough” to hurl the bomb at that point.

Or, in the time of the salpaggio, the tool bends too much and does not have the necessary force to pull out the fish from the water.

Of situations, there are dozens, and here returns to a theme that we have already discussed some of the line is: each rod has its reason and its use, and the difference between one and the other to play in the subtle relationship between the power of the tool and sensitivity.

To understand what we need, is the secret to choose the barrel (but it would be better to say “the” rods) right.

ACTION

The theme of the “power” of the rod also declined, with a further characteristic, which is the action.

The word describes what the barrel during the launch and the combat.

In simple words, how to fold, and as it returns upright after being folded.

Tools for weights lighter are referred to as “light” or “ultralight”, while the most potent ones are “heavy”, or “long distance”.

On the barrels in the trade it is easy to find the following acronyms, which we explain one-by-one:

- UL (ultra-light) and L (light): are the reeds more “soft”, with a parabolic action, or fold all of them, up to the reel, during launch and combat. Are the right choice for the peaches “to read” bombarde up to 6-7 grams of weight;
- ML (medium-light): a little more powerful than the other, usually rods with this type of action have a power range that varies between 8 and 15 grams;
- M (medium): is the classic rod “all purpose”, able to do, in the media, everything from fishing with bombardine read from 10 grams up to weights heavier than around 20, depending on the model. A type of action “all-rounder”;
- MH (medium-heavy): literally, a “medium-heavy”, i.e. an action that begins to harden the barrel in the part of the wider section to give it more power in the launch phase. We are already in the context of the bombarde from 20-25 grams;
- H (heavy), XH (extra-heavy), or LD (long distance): are the rods more powerful overall. The sensitivity switches to the second floor to give precedence to the power, so they are the ideal choice to launch the mortars of a certain weight at a great distance.

About the action, remember that the same rod, for example a 4.2 metres with a power of 5, can have two different actions, for example, M (medium) or MH (medium-heavy).

Many manufacturers create models is identical, but different in the action: it is the case of those who want to, for example, a bit more power on reed medium while still maintaining the sensitivity necessary to feel all the bites of the trout.
